During a recent Saturday evening gathering of friends, table laden with veggies, chips, cheeses and more, it so happened that two of us each unknowingly contributed a bottle of the same wine, a 2014 Camaraderie Cellars Madrona, from one of our favorite wineries.
Being the decant everywhere types, and considering we have the perfect travel wine decanter always at our fingertips, we decided this would be a great opportunity for a taste test.
First, one bottle of Madrona was poured straight from bottle to glass and served immediately. The second was decanted, of course, into our IsVinea Caravino Travel Decanter, and left alone for 30 minutes. Which was just long enough to finish off and evaluate the first bottle.
What we discovered when the two were compared was unmistakable. The non-decanted wine had a fruity, though, forward flavor with a relatively short finish. Some said it was a bit harsh for their tastes. Though it was still enjoyable, the word “uptight” came to my mind.
Which is understandable. It had been cooped up for a while, 5 years to be exact. It was ready for some fun, for after decanting, it definitely presented with a fuller flavor and an extended finish. It’s prominent notes of berries fully came around. It was apparent that the process of decanting brought out the richness of the wine, as well as it’s deeper more complex flavors and aromas.
This was a very interesting experiment, even for us Decantors. There is no mistaking that with a little decanting, with a little oxygen and a little time, that a great wine can be infused with a lotta life, loosened up and encouraged to put on it’s party shoes and waltz - or two-step - into the middle of the dance floor.
